Bill Herrmann’s experience began in 1977, when he reported repeated sightings of a strange object hovering over Charleston Air Force Base. On January 22, 1978, he managed to photograph the object, capturing a series of images that would later become central to his case.

Two months later, the encounter took a darker turn. Herrmann claimed the same craft returned, emitting a beam of light that paralyzed him before he lost consciousness. He later awoke in a field nearly 15 miles from his home, disoriented and with hours of missing time.

After the incident, he reported ongoing anxiety and insomnia, eventually undergoing hypnosis with researcher James A. Harder. Under hypnosis, Herrmann recalled being taken aboard the craft and examined by three humanoid beings with large heads and eyes. He claimed they communicated telepathically, identified themselves as coming from Zeta Reticuli, and warned that humanity’s violent nature could lead to its own destruction.

His case remains one of the more unusual UFO encounters, not only for the abduction claims, but for the photographs he said he captured of the craft.
